So when I saw the informercial for the Weezer Snuggie, I thought it was just an ad for their new album and a total spoof.
But...you can really buy one of these.
Alternative-rock band Weezer, known for its hipster coolness, is using possibly the uncoolest thing on the planet to promote its new album: a blanket with sleeves.
If you buy a Weezer Snuggie (a Wuggie) for $30, you get their new album, “Ratitude,” for free. They also have a deluxe pack, where you get a ZEBRA Snuggie and a special edition of the CD that has four extra tracks.
It is, of course, meant to be ironic — like when the trucker hat became popular with 20-somethings. But blogger Marshall Kirkpatrick points out that it’s also likely a sign of the times:
“It's pretty funny, really. People do seem more willing to buy these ridiculous blankets with arms than they are to pay for music these days. I think that's the point.”
I think the "point" is more goofiness and irony, which is kind of what Weezer has done forever. I doubt this is the start of a trend, and we see the "Green Day Slap Chop" next (though it sounds like an awesome idea).Last I checked, Buddy Holly didn't beget a wave of musicians tying in with 70's sitcoms.
Anyway, remember that panic own options a couple weeks ago? Now you just can't out that door fast enough. Saw a CBOE tweet go buy on YHOO seeing large options volume at 26 month volatility lows, and that's far from atypical. The VIX looks ugly today, and oddly enough it's painting a rosier picture of volatility than anything else. VXX is down 5.29% as I type, implying the VIX could be down 10%. Not going to parse it, but Friday VIXes often understate volatility, and Monday's overstate it.
